Your dog's the key to better fitness

Yes, walking the dog is a good way to keep fit. It usually doesn't provide cardio exercise, but it does keep you moving and helps to prevent "death by chair." It's important exercise for the dog too.

But can you involve the dog in an even broader fitness program?

Summer? Do go near the water!

Does this "dog on the street" look guilty to you? Apparently that's the way he feels after going in for a dip on a hot day.

Don't let the dog lick your face

Maybe it would be wisest to avoid that wonderful sloppy dog lick in the face. As it turns out, there are bacteria living in your pet's saliva that can cause a dangerous infection in humans.

What does animal welfare really mean?

Well, maybe good animal welfare means a lot the same as we mean when talking about well being for humans. Here's what one writer thinks...

"Animal welfare refers to how an animal is coping, both physically and mentally, with the conditions in which it lives. When good animal welfare occurs, the animal is healthy, comfortable, well nourished, safe, able to express its inherent behavior, and is not suffering from pain, fear, or distress."

We need to understand this concept in order to decide on appropriate legislation to promote and protect animal welfare.  READ MORE==>

Dogs and fireworks not a good mix

Summer is a great time for fireworks. But did you know that your dog, like most dogs, is probably really afraid of those explosions and dazzling displays of light in the sky?

Loud bangs make them crazy and even want to run away. A friend of mine had this experience. He was letting off fireworks to entertain his family and the family dog became so agitated it broke free from the leash and headed off into the night. Unlike Lassie, that dog stayed lost. She never came home again.

So please, lock your dog inside and protect him or her from loud fireworks. Good advice to avoid a heartbreaking loss.
